Why fill a tooth gap anyway?

While a missing tooth may seem relatively unimportant, it can trigger a number of other events which can lead to a plethora of dental issues. Our teeth are designed to function together as a system; to support one another and balance the forces applied to our teeth when we eat or chew. When a tooth is lost, these forces become directionally imbalanced which causes teeth to move in to fill the gap and cause a misaligned bite. This, in turn, makes it more difficult to clean your teeth and can lead to tooth decay, periodontal disease, and even more issues such as ongoing bone loss or jaw shrinkage. Placing dental implants restores the stability and strength of your dental arch and also prevents bone loss from occuring.

What exactly are dental implants ?

The most common dental implant involves a titanium post implanted into the jaw just like a tooth root. Once placed surgically inside the gum, it fuses with the bone and creates a stable platform that is capable of supporting a dental crown. Dental implants are also used to secure dental bridges and to retain dentures. Dental implants in Calgary enable you to permanently restore the function and look just like your natural teeth. With a seamless color match to your natural teeth, no one will be able to tell the difference.

Can anyone get dental implants?

To be eligible for dental implants it’s imperative that you have healthy gums, sufficient bone, and overall good health. Our highly experienced team will evaluate each case on its own merit, so don’t be afraid to come and see us for a free consultation in Calgary. If you have insufficient bone, we may recommend a bone graft to increase the amount and depth of your bone, to ensure the best chance of implant success.

So what happens during the procedure?

With the use of 3D imaging and X-ray technology, we can determine the condition of the bone and the exact region of where the implant will be placed. Using anesthesia administered by our certified dentists, a small precise incision is made into the gun to reveal the area beneath to carefully position the implant.

Once the implant is in place, the gum tissue is stitched back over the gums for the implant to heal. Healing can take between 3 to 6 months and it is at this stage that the implant fuses with the bone.

Once the implant becomes solid in the bone, a dental impression is taken and sent to a laboratory for a crown to be created. The crown is then attached to the implant. The entire procedure takes on average of 4-6 months with regular dental checkups to ensure your implant is properly functioning.

Once placed, provided that good standards of brushing and flossing are maintained, there’s no reason why a dental implant can’t last for many decades to come.
