So what constitutes a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem in your mouth that requires urgent treatment in order to save your tooth, and/or relieve your pain. It’s important to give us a call straight away, as quick treatment can be the key to saving your tooth. Ignoring the problem can lead to more damage and expense.

A few common examples of dental emergencies are:
• Severe toothache
• Cracked or fractured tooth
• Uncontrollable blood loss after a recent extraction
• Swelling of face or mouth
• Trauma to the face or mouth

During your emergency appointment our main concern is to take away the pain; although depending on what has caused the dental problem, you may require follow up visits for further treatment. While you’re on your way to our dental office there are steps we recommend you take to help with the pain, such as over the counter pain killers; or if you’re experiencing heavy bleeding, biting down on a gauze pad to apply pressure.

If you knocked a tooth out

A knocked out tooth is certainly a dental emergency. There’s a good chance your tooth can still be saved but it requires immediate dental attention. Give us a call immediately. and make your way straight here.
In the meantime, locate the tooth and make sure you always handle it by the crown and not the root. Then if possible, gently clean the tooth in water, but don’t scrub! Next, carefully place the tooth back into the socket and hold it there until you reach us. If you can’t keep it in the socket, then place it in a small container in some milk instead. The quicker the tooth is re-inserted, the better the chance of saving it!
Regular check-ups every 6 months will help reduce the risk of experiencing a dental emergency but we know that accidents can happen regardless.
